New England Lofts LLC has completed the $9 million apartment conversion of an ornate downtown office building where Howard Hughes once guided the operations of Trans World Airlines.

The seven-story New England Building, 112 W. Ninth St. in Kansas City, was completed in 1887 for the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Boston and was acquired by TWA in the 1940s to house its corporate offices and pilot training program.
